Crispy, golden-brown onion rings that bloom into delightful petals, perfect for snacking or sharing at gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs
  • Oil for frying
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (for dipping sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup (for dipping sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional, for dipping sauce)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oil: Heat your oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the onions: Cut off the tops of the onions and peel away the outer skin. Slice each onion vertically into sections without cutting all the way through the base.
  3. Mix the coating: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Coat the onions: Dip each onion into the flour mixture, then in buttermilk, followed by breadcrumbs.
  5. Fry the onions: Carefully place the coated onions in the hot oil, frying them until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Drain the excess oil: Remove the onions and place them on paper towels.
  7. Prepare the dipping sauce: Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and hot sauce in a bowl.
  8. Serve and enjoy: Present the blooming onions hot with the dip on the side.

Notes

For extra crunch, use panko breadcrumbs. Ensure oil is hot enough to avoid soggy onions.
