  • 1 cup warm water (105°F to 115°F)
  • red food coloring, as desired
  • 2 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups rice flour
  • black food coloring or activated charcoal, as preferred
  • additional water for coloring

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the instant bread mix, 2 tablespoons active dry yeast, 1 cup of warm water, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add red food coloring to achieve a deep color.
  2. Divide the blood-red dough into 12 equal balls and place on a cookie sheet. Cover and let rise until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the black topping by mixing the active dry yeast, sugar, oil, salt, and rice flour, then add the mixture of black food coloring and water until thick.
  4. Cover the black topping and let it sit for 15 minutes.
  5. Generously smear the black topping over each risen dough ball and let rest for another 15 minutes.
  6. Bake according to the bread mix instructions, turning the pan halfway through for even browning.
  7. Remove from the oven, let cool, and serve warm with butter or as desired.
