  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • ½ cup milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour the baking pans.
  2. Sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  4. Gradually add the boiling water and stir until the batter is smooth.
  5. Pour equal amounts into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack.
  7. Beat the softened butter until creamy, then add powdered sugar and cocoa powder gradually.
  8. Incorporate milk and vanilla slowly until fluffy.
  9. Spread the frosting between cake layers and over the top and sides once cooled.

Notes

Sift dry ingredients to prevent lumps. Don’t skip the boiling water for a moist cake. Cool completely before frosting.
