Ingredients
Scale
1 cup long-grain white rice
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 (10.5 oz) can French onion soup
1 (10.5 oz) can beef broth
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
1/2 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese (optional, for topping)
1/4 cup crispy fried onions (for garnish)
1 tablespoon chopped parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a medium skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 10-12 minutes.
In a baking dish, combine the uncooked rice, caramelized onions, French onion soup, beef broth, garlic powder, black pepper, and thyme. Stir well.
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed all the liquid.
If adding cheese, remove the foil, sprinkle shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese over the top, and return to the oven uncovered for 5 more minutes until melted.
Remove from the oven and let sit for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
Garnish with crispy fried onions and fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
Adjust the amount of thyme based on your taste preference.
Feel free to substitute the cheese with your favorite variety.
