Old Fashioned Raisin Pie is a sweet and nostalgic dessert filled with plump raisins, spices, and a buttery crust, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups of ripe raisins
  • 1 cup (240 ml) of water
  • 1 cup (200 g) of granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp of cornstarch
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp of ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp of lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (60 g) of unsalted butter
  • 1 pie crust

Instructions

  1. Place 2 cups of ripe raisins and 1 cup of water in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. Add 1 cup of sugar, 2 tbsp of cornstarch, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of nutmeg, and 1 tbsp of lemon juice.
  4. Stir until well combined and cook for an additional 5 minutes until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tbsp of vanilla extract and 1/4 cup of diced butter.
  6. Set the filling aside to cool slightly while preparing the crust.
  7. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  8. Roll out your homemade crust or unroll a store-bought one into the pie dish.
  9. Trim excess dough and crimp the edges decoratively.
  10. Pour the cooled raisin filling into the prepared crust evenly.
  11. Brush the crust with an egg wash made from a beaten egg and water.
  12. Bake the pie for 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce to 350°F and bake for 30-35 minutes.

Notes

  • Soak raisins in hot water for 15 minutes for plump, juicy bites that burst with flavor.
  • For a richer texture, mix cornstarch with sugar before adding to avoid lumps in the filling.
