Ingredients
Scale
12 ounces ziti pasta
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
Salt and pepper to taste
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
Instructions
In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing for 2-3 minutes until the onion is translucent.
Add the ground beef or Italian sausage to the pot, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, chicken or vegetable broth, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.
Add the ziti pasta to the pot, stirring to combine. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the pasta is cooked al dente, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
Once the pasta is cooked, remove the pot from heat and stir in the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese until melted and creamy.
Garnish with fresh basil if desired and serve hot.
Notes
Feel free to add extra vegetables for more flavor and nutrition.
You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
Make sure to stir regularly to prevent the pasta from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
