Fresh Thyme: 1 teaspoon (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)

Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Melt butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat, add onions and salt, and cook until soft and caramelized (about 15 minutes). Add brown sugar and garlic; cook for another 5 minutes.
Push onions to the side and add bratwurst, searing on all sides for about 5 minutes.
Add beer and thyme, scrape the skillet to deglaze, and bring to a simmer.
Cover and transfer to the oven; braise for 30-40 minutes.
Let rest for a few minutes, then serve with caramelized onions and mustard.
Notes
Feel free to use apple cider for a non-alcoholic version.
Adjust seasoning according to personal preference.
Mustard is optional but adds a nice touch when serving.
