A spooky yet delicious Skull Caprese Salad perfect for Halloween celebrations, combining fresh mozzarella skulls, ripe tomatoes, and fragrant basil.

Ingredients

  • Fresh Mozzarella: 16 ounces (or two 8-ounce balls or logs)
  • Ripe Tomatoes: 1.5 to 2 pounds
  • Fresh Basil Leaves: 1 large bunch (about 1.5 cups, loosely packed)
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: ¼ cup
  • Balsamic Glaze: ¼ cup
  • Flaky Sea Salt: ½ teaspoon, or to taste
  • Freshly Ground Black Pepper: ¼ teaspoon, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mozzarella: Remove mozzarella from liquid, pat dry, and slice into ½-inch thick rounds.
  2. Carve the Skulls: Use a skull mold or cookie cutter, or carve by hand using a paring knife and straw to create eye sockets and a nose.
  3. Prepare the Tomatoes and Basil: Wash and dry tomatoes and basil; slice larger tomatoes and tear basil leaves.
  4. Assemble the Salad Base: Arrange sliced tomatoes on a dark platter, overlapping them for a vibrant base.
  5. Position the Skulls and Basil: Place carved mozzarella skulls on top of the tomatoes; tuck basil leaves throughout the salad.
  6. Dress and Garnish the Salad: Drizzle olive oil and balsamic glaze over the salad just before serving.

Notes

  • Use high-quality mozzarella for the best flavor.
  • Mix tomato varieties for a more visually appealing dish.
  • Packing the mozzarella slightly in the mold can yield better shapes.
  • Ensure the salad is assembled just before serving to keep ingredients fresh.
