- 4 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 cup brewed sweet tea (strong and slightly sweetened)
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until onions become golden and caramelized (about 30–40 minutes).
- Stir in red pepper flakes (if using), sweet tea, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and balsamic vinegar.
- Simmer until the liquid reduces and the mixture thickens to a jam-like consistency (about 10–15 minutes).
- Let cool before storing in a jar. Keep refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
- The jam pairs well with meats and cheeses.
- Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of brown sugar.
