  • 1 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 4 cups thinly sliced apples (preferably Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: caramel sauce for drizzling

Instructions

  2. Mix together the flour, granulated sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add the cold, cubed butter and cut it in until the mixture is crumbly.
  4. Press about 2/3 of this mixture into the pan evenly and bake for 15 minutes.
  5. Prepare the apple filling by tossing sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
  6. Spread the apple filling evenly over the baked crust and sprinkle the remaining crumble mixture on top.
  7. Bake for about 35-40 minutes or until bubbly and golden.
  8. Cool completely before slicing and serve with caramel if desired.

Notes

Use cold ingredients for a flakier crust. Allow bars to cool for easier slicing.
