- 5 large very ripe bananas; divided
- 1 cup whole milk (or evaporated milk)
- ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
- 15.25 ounce box yellow cake mix
- ½ cup dark brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or to taste)
- ¾ cup cold unsalted butter, sliced into approximately 24 pats
- Preheat oven to 350F and spray a 9×13-inch pan with cooking spray or grease the pan.
- Add about 2 1/2 bananas into the pan and mash them, then distribute or spread them evenly.
- Slice the remaining 2 1/2 bananas into thin bite-sized pieces and scatter them over the mashed bananas.
- Evenly pour milk over the banana layers.
- If using nuts, sprinkle them evenly over the pan.
- Evenly sprinkle the dry cake mix over everything.
- Distribute the sliced pats of butter over the surface.
- In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle it over the pan.
- Do not mix the ingredients; they will combine while baking.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden and the liquid is bubbling.
- Allow the cake to cool for 30 minutes before serving.
- Scoop warm cake into bowls and optionally drizzle with caramel sauce, serve with ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- Using very ripe bananas enhances the sweetness and flavor.
- For a richer taste, dark brown sugar is recommended.
- Ensure cake mix is evenly distributed to avoid a dry texture.
- All ovens are different; check the cake early to avoid overbaking.
