Delicious and crispy bite-sized blooming onions that are perfect for sharing at gatherings or enjoying as an appetizer.

  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 cup Cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • Oil for Frying
  • 1/2 cup Cream for Dipping Sauce
  • Herbs or Spices for Dipping Sauce (e.g., fresh dill, garlic)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mini Onions: Peel away the outer skins and trim the tops and bottoms.
  2. Mix the Coating: Combine the flour, cornmeal, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in a deep bowl.
  3. Prepare the Buttermilk: Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl for dipping.
  4. Drench & Coat: Dip each onion into the buttermilk and then roll in the flour mixture.
  5. Heat the Oil: Heat the oil in a deep fryer or pot until it reaches 350°F.
  6. Fry or Air-Fry: Fry the onions until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes, or air-fry for 10-12 minutes.
  7. Whip Up the Dipping Sauce: Mix cream with chosen herbs or spices.

Notes

For optimal freshness, prepare onions a few hours in advance and keep them covered in the fridge. Avoid overcrowding the frying pan for a crispy texture.
