Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • 1 pinch salt (for frosting)
  • ⅓ cup chocolate or rainbow sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line your 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and creamy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients in a separate bowl, whisking together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Combine the dry ingredients with the butter mixture on low speed just until a soft dough forms.
  6. Spread the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  7. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until the edges are set and the center doesn’t look wet.
  8. Cool completely in the pan before frosting.
  9. Make the frosting by beating the frosting butter until smooth, then mixing in powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, milk, and salt until creamy.
  10. Frost the cooled bars, sprinkle with desired toppings, slice into squares, and serve.

Notes

Ensure your butter is softened for the best texture. Don’t overmix the dough.
